Designer Inspiration

“This door is a great illustration of custom design. Trying to reflect my client’s personal taste in the project, I asked her to point out her favourite art piece in the living room. She handed me a hand-carved stone sculpture by the African artist, Marufu. I was immediately captivated and drawn to the piece. 

The rough, raw, and primitive carving of the effigy’s gown, was offset by the softness of the polished stone hands. Inherent beauty in the craftsmanship and the denseness of the pattern. I began developing my own carving technique, playing with the rhythm and depth of the cutting. The resulting door was charcoal black in colour, sparking images of burned and charred firewood: carbon. ”
